The FCC is planning to retroactively ban disguised DJI gadgets

The Federal Communications Commission is preparing to implement its first-ever retroactive ban on technology imports, targeting several entities believed to be operating as corporate fronts for the prominent Chinese drone manufacturer DJI.

This action follows a previous proposal to fine eight distinct businesses, including those associated with Skyrover drones and Xtra action cameras, for allegedly bypassing existing American trade restrictions. If this newly proposed retroactive ban is finalized, these specified entities will be strictly prohibited from importing, marketing, or selling their hardware within the United States. This move would likely force major online retailers to pull existing stock from their fulfillment centers, causing substantial financial losses for the affected distributors. However, the regulation will not impact consumers who have already purchased the devices, and the agency is currently observing a mandatory thirty-day public feedback window before finalizing its policy decision.

In tandem with these impending restrictions, the regulatory agency has suspended the authorization codes for the accused firms, potentially preventing them from registering future consumer electronic hardware for American distribution. Furthermore, the regulator has permanently severed ties with a major Chinese testing laboratory, SGS-CSTC, citing compliance issues regarding foreign government ownership thresholds established under American communications law. Although some critics point out that the federal government has historically declined to share explicit public intelligence regarding the precise national security risks of foreign-manufactured consumer cameras and drones, the commission remains firm in its regulatory stance. The targeted businesses, which mostly failed to respond to the commission's official requests for information, face further punitive actions if they fail to address the allegations during the ongoing investigation.
