Apple CEO Tim Cook is stepping down

Apple has announced a major leadership transition, with long-time Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook stepping down from his role.

Cook, who has helmed the technology giant since succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011, will transition to the position of executive chairman of the company's board of directors. John Ternus, currently serving as the senior vice president of hardware engineering, is set to take over as the new Chief Executive Officer and join the board on September 1st, 2026. Cook will work alongside Ternus during the upcoming months to ensure a seamless transition of responsibilities, after which Cook will focus on corporate governance and engagement with policymakers worldwide.\n\nAlongside the CEO transition, Apple has reorganized its executive hardware leadership team. Johny Srouji, previously the senior vice president of hardware technologies, has been named the company's chief hardware officer, taking on an expanded portfolio that now includes overseeing hardware engineering. Under Srouji's supervision, Tom Marieb will step up to lead the hardware engineering department. Ternus, who originally joined the company in 2001 and played a central role in designing iconic consumer devices like the iPad and AirPods, was widely anticipated to be Cook's successor following several years of speculative media reports identifying him as the frontrunner for the executive post.
