Epic Games buys artist portfolio site ArtStation

Epic Games has completed its acquisition of ArtStation, a prominent digital marketplace and portfolio platform used widely by professional artists in the gaming and entertainment industries.

Under the terms of the transaction, which were not publicly disclosed, ArtStation will maintain its independent branding and operations. A key highlight of the transition is a significant reduction in the transaction fees charged to sellers on the platform, allowing creators to retain a much larger portion of their revenue. Standard artist commissions will drop from thirty percent down to twelve percent, while premium subscribers will see their platform fees reduced to eight percent, and down to five percent for self-promoted sales. This adjustment mirrors Epic's own store model, which advocates for developer-friendly revenue splits.

This strategic move aligns with Epic Games' broader public push for lower platform commission rates, coinciding with its high-profile legal dispute against Apple regarding mobile marketplace fees. Beyond fee reductions, the acquisition will allow ArtStation to expand its staff, as the leadership team plans to actively hire and grow to enhance the platform's features for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artists. Additionally, as part of the celebration of the acquisition, the company announced that its educational streaming video platform, ArtStation Learning, will be made completely free to all users for the remainder of the calendar year, representing a direct benefit to digital creators looking to build their skills.
