New bootloader lets you take the "Meta" out of the original Meta Quest

A newly developed open-source exploit called QuestStack has granted software enthusiasts and developers complete administrative control over the original Meta Quest virtual reality headset.

Although Meta officially terminated software support for the 2019 device last year to focus on its newer hardware iterations, independent community developers have successfully bypassed these manufacturer restrictions. The project works by chaining known security vulnerabilities in the headset's Android-based fastboot process, leading to full root privileges. This process has been streamlined to the point where owners can unlock their devices directly via a web browser interface after connecting the hardware to a computer, avoiding complicated installations.

This breakthrough allows owners of the legacy virtual reality headset to completely bypass Meta's ecosystem and authentication servers. Consequently, users can sideload applications without registering for official developer accounts, and they can set up the device even if Meta decides to shut down the activation servers in the future. Additionally, developers are leveraging this root access to experiment with performance enhancements, such as unlocking a higher ninety-hertz refresh rate that was previously throttled by the official operating system, and integrating alternative VR controllers. While this jailbreaking method could theoretically be adapted for newer generations of the headset, developers caution that the risk of permanently disabling newer devices is currently too high to recommend.
