Instagram cracks down on AI accounts pretending to be human

Instagram is introducing a series of stricter moderation measures designed to curb the proliferation of deceptive artificial intelligence accounts that masquerade as real human beings on the platform.

To improve transparency, the social media service is updating its terminology, replacing the previous "AI creator" tag with a more explicit "AI-generated profile" designation. This adjustment aims to assist users who have expressed growing frustration over the difficulty of distinguishing genuine human creators from synthetic, computer-generated personas. By clearly identifying these virtual influencers, the company hopes to restore user trust and provide a more authentic experience across its network.

Under the new enforcement framework, the platform will actively detect profiles that fail to self-disclose their synthetic nature and penalize them by limiting their organic reach. Consequently, non-compliant accounts will see their posts excluded from algorithmic discovery spaces, including recommendation feeds such as Reels and the Explore page. Notably, these penalties target fully automated personas rather than human creators who simply employ artificial intelligence software as creative tools to assist with content production. Account owners who believe their profiles have been mistakenly flagged under the new system will have the opportunity to submit an appeal to restore their visibility.
