Sony is shutting down its live TV service PlayStation Vue in January 2020

Sony has officially announced that it will terminate its live television streaming service, PlayStation Vue, in late January 2020.

The decision follows years of financial difficulties for the platform, which has consistently operated at a loss since its debut in early 2015. To combat escalating operational costs and expensive network licensing fees, the company repeatedly raised subscription rates, including a recent price hike across all service tiers. However, these adjustments were insufficient to offset expenses, and the platform struggled to grow its subscriber base, peaking at around half a million users—far fewer than its primary market competitors.

This shutdown highlights the intense pressure within the modern pay-television sector, where high content acquisition costs make it difficult for standalone digital bundles to thrive. In response to these market dynamics, Sony intends to refocus its strategic resources on its core video gaming division, directing customers to alternative entertainment applications and its digital storefront. The closure of the service also mirrors a larger industry trend, as consumer interest shifts away from traditional live television packages in favor of dedicated on-demand streaming platforms currently being launched by major media and technology conglomerates.
