Valve slowly expands SteamOS support on non-Valve hardware

Valve has released a new beta update for its Linux-based operating system, SteamOS, which extends compatibility to a wider variety of portable gaming devices produced by other manufacturers.

This latest update, version 3.8.25, introduces initial controller support for several recently released handheld consoles, signaling that the company is actively working to make its platform more versatile. Notably, the software now offers early compatibility with devices powered by Intel processors, such as the newly released MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, moving beyond the operating system's historical focus on AMD-based systems. Additionally, the update integrates controller support for recent handheld models from brands like Ayaneo and Konkr, while delivering stability and performance improvements for older hardware lines, including OneXPlayer.

This rollout builds on previous software updates from earlier in the year that sought to improve performance across diverse hardware configurations. By steadily refining system compatibility with external components and competitive devices, Valve is gradually positioning its proprietary platform as a broader operating system option for the handheld gaming market. Furthermore, the update brings a notable driver enhancement for the Steam Controller, enabling it to communicate directly with native applications on the desktop even when the primary Steam software is inactive. This adjustment provides greater flexibility for users who frequently exit the main gaming interface to run emulators, alternative storefronts, or other productivity tools in desktop mode.
