Google co-founder Sergey Brin has reportedly contributed an additional $20 million to Build a Better California, a political group campaigning against California's proposed Proposition 40.

This ballot initiative seeks to impose a one-time five percent levy on the net worth of the state's wealthiest individuals, specifically targeting around 200 billionaires residing in California. With this latest contribution, Brin's total financial commitment to defeating the measure has surpassed $100 million, a sum aimed at avoiding an estimated personal tax obligation of over $13 billion. Proponents of the measure argue that the generated revenue is desperately needed to bolster the state's healthcare infrastructure, particularly its Medicaid program, which is anticipated to lose billions of dollars in federal funding due to upcoming national budget adjustments.

The legislative proposal has intensified discussions surrounding the tax responsibilities of the technology sector's elite, prompting several high-profile executives and venture capitalists to relocate their residences outside of California. While some prominent figures have chosen to depart, others have expressed varying stances on the issue; for instance, Nvidia's co-founder Jensen Huang publicly stated his willingness to comply with the proposed tax. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed reservations about the initiative, warning that localized wealth taxes could lead to a significant exodus of top business leaders and major corporations. Instead, Newsom has advocated for broader federal reforms to address loopholes that allow ultra-wealthy individuals to borrow against their stock portfolios to minimize taxable income. California citizens are scheduled to vote on Proposition 40 this November.
