Meta is reportedly ready to launch less pervy smart glasses

Meta is reportedly preparing to introduce a new version of its smart glasses that excludes built-in cameras.

Codenamed "Luna," these glasses are anticipated to be unveiled at the upcoming Meta Connect conference. In place of photographic capabilities, the device will rely on six integrated microphones and speakers to facilitate interactions with the company's artificial intelligence assistants. The omission of the camera components allows the frames to feature a slimmer, more conventional design. This development follows a wave of public relations challenges regarding the privacy implications of Meta's existing camera-equipped eyewear, which has been banned in several public spaces due to concerns over secret filming.

Alongside the camera-free model, the technology giant is expected to preview advanced augmented reality glasses under the codename "Phoenix," which are projected for a release closer to 2027. Despite removing video recording features from the upcoming Luna model, industry observers suggest that the new device could still attract scrutiny. The inclusion of subtle, always-on microphones in a design that closely mimics standard spectacles may continue to fuel debates over public surveillance and data privacy, particularly given historical skepticism toward the parent company's data practices.
