The Pentagon now has its own version of ChatGPT and Grok | TechCrunch

The United States Department of Defense has expanded its secure internal artificial intelligence platform, GenAI.mil, by integrating specialized military versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok.

These new tools, officially named ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are designed to grant approximately three million military and civilian employees safe access to advanced language models. By routing these systems through a centralized, secure military portal, the Pentagon ensures that sensitive government information is protected from the standard data harvesting processes typical of commercial applications. This initiative has already seen substantial engagement, with more than half of the defense workforce utilizing the platform since its initial launch.\n\nThe newly introduced systems will serve distinct functions within the organization. ChatGPT Mil is slated to streamline routine, unclassified administrative duties such as paperwork, logistical planning, and policy drafting. In contrast, Grok for Government, which operates via SpaceX's Starshield secure satellite network, is positioned for more direct operational support, aiming to increase speed and precision across logistical networks and procurement market research. Notably absent from the roster of tools is Anthropic's Claude model, following a dispute where the developer insisted on maintaining safety guardrails that clashed with military demands. Instead, the military has leaned into partnerships with alternative commercial tech giants to rapidly scale up its modern defense computing capabilities.
