Less than 2.5% of Taylor Farms' recalled lettuce went to Taco Bells

A newly released report from the Food and Drug Administration has disclosed the full distribution breakdown of contaminated lettuce recalled by Taylor Farms, revealing that only a tiny fraction of the product was sent to Taco Bell locations.

Although the fast-food chain was initially publicly identified as a primary source of the severe Cyclospora parasite outbreak, the federal agency's data indicates that less than two and a half percent of the more than 236,000 recalled cases went to Taco Bell’s parent organization. Instead, the overwhelming majority of the tainted iceberg lettuce was distributed to various other major retailers and food service providers across the country. Walmart's private label received the largest share, encompassing over forty-six percent of the total contaminated shipments, while Taylor Farms' own brand and other major food distributors received the rest.

The federal disclosure brings to light significant transparency issues surrounding the agricultural supplier, which had previously faced criticism for its slow response to the health crisis and its cryptic public recall notices. While the company used obscure abbreviations to describe its clients in official recall documents, the regulatory agency's detailed enforcement report finally provided clear names and quantities. Public health officials had originally directed consumers away from Taco Bell based on early epidemiological patterns, but the newly published volumes suggest a much wider exposure network. The massive outbreak has already resulted in tens of thousands of infections and multiple deaths across dozens of states, yet the final destination of much of the distributed lettuce remains untracked.
