Brad Lightcap, a prominent long-term executive at the artificial intelligence research laboratory OpenAI, has announced his departure from the organization to launch an unspecified new enterprise.

Lightcap first joined the firm in 2018, initially managing its financial operations as chief financial officer for a four-year period before ascending to the position of chief operating officer in 2022. Following a realignment of executive responsibilities earlier this year, he had transitioned to directing special projects. In a farewell memo distributed to staff members, he reflected on his extensive tenure, noting his pride in having established the foundational structures for many of the organization's business, legal, human resources, and corporate operations departments during a period of massive growth.

His departure coincides with a broader phase of executive restructuring at the artificial intelligence developer, which is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering that could have significant implications for the wider technology sector. Lightcap is not the only high-ranking official to leave recently; several other prominent figures, including those overseeing artificial general intelligence development, video generation models, and scientific research, have also recently exited.
