Google just announced a major shakeup of its top AI leadership

Google has announced a major restructuring of its artificial intelligence leadership team, signaling a new strategic direction for its primary research divisions.

Demis Hassabis, who previously headed Google's AI efforts, is transitioning into a broader advisory and governance role as the chair of Google DeepMind and the chief scientist of parent company Alphabet. While Hassabis will continue to spearhead Isomorphic Labs—Alphabet's specialized AI drug discovery venture—his day-to-day operational responsibilities at DeepMind will transition to Koray Kavukcuoglu. Kavukcuoglu, formerly the division's chief technology officer, has been promoted to senior vice president of DeepMind and will report directly to Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai while maintaining his responsibilities as chief AI architect.

Simultaneously, Google is parting ways with two of its most prominent engineering veterans, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, who are departing to launch a new independent venture. The duo is establishing an artificial intelligence-focused public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop, which aims to develop automated computational solutions for complex scientific and engineering challenges. Google has committed to backing the new startup as a founding investor, maintaining a connection to the founders' future research. According to corporate communications, these leadership shifts reflect a broader commitment by the technology giant to direct its computational advancements toward global scientific breakthroughs, particularly in medicine and disease treatment.
