Very Large Man Could Join Helldivers Movie After A Different Very Large (Aqua)Man Dropped Out

The upcoming cinematic adaptation of the popular cooperative video game Helldivers has experienced a major casting adjustment during its ongoing pre-production phase.

Alan Ritchson, the lead actor of the action series Reacher, has reportedly signed on to portray the primary protagonist in the film. This development follows the departure of Jason Momoa, who was originally slated to star in the project before exiting the production earlier this year. Director Justin Lin, widely recognized for his work guiding several installments of the Fast & Furious and Star Trek franchises, remains firmly attached to helm the feature. Sony has scheduled the motion picture for a theatrical release in November 2027, with additional casting announcements expected as development progresses.

The film project builds on the massive commercial triumph of the tactical shooter Helldivers 2, which was developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and went on to sell over twenty million units following its debut in 2024. While the development studio's executive leadership has expressed lighthearted enthusiasm for the project, they have also clarified that Arrowhead will not hold ultimate creative control over the cinematic translation of their intellectual property. Meanwhile, despite his departure from the sci-fi project, Jason Momoa continues to establish a strong presence in the gaming-to-film landscape, with roles secured in other high-profile adaptations, including an upcoming Street Fighter movie and a sequel to the Minecraft cinematic feature.
